Hanoi 5 Days 4 Nights

Recommended Posts

Quick trip report, probably with lots of pics. Took over 700, will try to keep it under 150.

Flew in a group of 5 with Jetstar from Suvarnabhumi, 4000 per person without luggage. It was February, so a jacket or jumper was required.

Departure time was 1 pm, which left us some time wo explore the city in the afternoon.

Stayed in the Golden Legend which had excellent ratings, probably because the staff asked every guests to rate with 10 points on booking.com.

Would probably choose it again as the staff is really friendly and very helpful to organize the trips, taxi from and to AP (sometimes the ordinary taxis will say your hotel is closed and drop you somewhere else) and gave recommendations regarding the places for sightseeing.

Most of the hotels are in the city center which is good as you won't need transportation when going for dinner. Rooms are usually tiny.

We had 3 rooms, one got an upgrade which was decent sized.

We spend 1 day touring the city, 1 day a trip to the river (Tamcoc) and 1 day trip to Halong Bay. If you stay longer you might do an overnight trip to Halong Bay where you stay 1 or more days on the boat.

Anther option would be to go to see the rice terraces (Sapa). Will do it next time.

Now let's look at some pics:

Day 1: arrival at hotel and a walk to/ along the lake in the afternoon.

Finally reached the lake. A giant turtle living in the lake was giving a magic sword to an army leader some hundred years ago who then won agains the chinkies, so the legend says.

Didn't try these, a taxi is much safer especially for longer distances.

The side walks are either used by vendors or blocked by parking motorbikes.

Time for dinner. This was a place recommended on a flyer available in the hotels. It has only 1 dish! which was rice noodles with fried fish and vegatables, a local speciality.

Found it ok but bland. In general I didn't like the Vietnamese food. My 4 travel companions - all Thai - were happy when we chose a Thai restaurant, while I preferred the Western food.

post-111-0-48073400-1463750736_thumb.jpg

The Thais were still hungry.

I was hungry for something else.

A bit later the Thais were hungry again and we visited another Viet place. This was supposed to be a national dress.

Didn't like the food very much.

Day 2: City tour of Hanoi

I will tell you now that this was exhausting as we walked between most of the sights. If you are not good on foot, take a taxi.

First the Pagoda/temple Chùa Trấn Quốc at the large lake, north of Hanoi.

Those long things are dog tails. There is a street in Hanoi that features only (or mainly?) restaurants serving dog.

Next stop after a long walk was the temple of literature where the students go for a prayer if they are too lazy to learn.

Great stuff Campo.

I will probably walk everywhere, last year I went to Prague and walked 28 miles in 3 days on cobbled streets etc in leather shoes, loved it. I am a walker (part of the reason I am going solo).

What is with this 'Legend' place, looks like a bar, also that coffee place in the tiered building, is this where I should hang out. Will do the stools 1 night no doubt but getting down is easy, getting up another matter!

looks like 4 nights would probably be enough, are there any beaches nearby or should I just stay Hanoi........

Will be doing Prague next week with the GF, probably 3 days 2 nights.

The hotel is actually called: http://goldenlegenddiamondhotel.com/

Didn't take pics (not sure what pic you are talking about), it has no bar, just a small breakfast room on the first floor above the reception.

No idea about beaches.

The Hanoi Opera house was visited only from the ouside. Don't know how it is inside, doors were locked.

The square infront.

The museum of Vietnamese history wasn't worth the visit. Did I tell her on purpose to pose on the left side?

We had it mixed up with the Vietnamese war history museum where we wanted to go (the one with the planes outside). Maybe next time.

There is a water puppet theater but I believe it is not operational.

The real water puppet theater is located near the turtle lake but we didn't see the show.
