so a question for the workers already working in SE asia whats the chances of a 55 year old kiwi with 30 years of fitter/welder in pulp and paper and steel refinery last 10 in supervisory positions.Getting a oil rig or some decent job in asia

Dont mean to be negative and I have been wrong on this subject before but I would say zero mate in regards to the oil and gas game (offshore rigs)

but for your info Chevron are picking up big time over the next couple of years in the gulf of thailand

I also know some absolute diamonds who are the complete opposite and I am lucky enough to call them friends.

I've known some good guys like that too, but they're usually off the game already, retired, or confident enough in their own skills to not see other/younger guys as a threat.

hmm, I wonder why inspector is so quiet on an LOS board if he's living in LOS...

but I do know some who completely stopped posting after moving to LOS permanently.

Didn't Chevron "Nationalize" a lot since 2006 ?

I know a few who were losing their jobs & moved to Kazakhstan & Sakhalin.

A lot of guys moved on last year as they were on rotation living in Thailand and Chevron stopped paying tax for them in Thailand but they still have a huge OS workforce and drilling will really ramp up in 2012/13 so I assume there will be some openings at Chevron, PTT as well as with 3rd party contractors. (halliburton, schlumberger, transocean, weatherford,Baker, etc) Not sure on the production side but the drilling side will definitely expand alot. Contracts are signed and new rigs have started construction

Yes the Gorgon project. Oz has been booming in the offshore oil/gas game more than I can ever remember. I dont think there has ever been so many rigs there and so many contracts on offer. The construction onshore to support it is huge and Western Australia has been booming

Oz and Indo seem to be growing quicker than elsewhere in asia but Thailand is going to grow considerably 2012/13

No google, no media, just what I know has been happening and is coming up based on contracts

Nick

give worldwideworker.com, rigzone and expatengineer.net a look

I would suggest based on what you have stated that onshore construction (plants, pipelines, etc) might be a good place to look. The middle east is probably the best region for opportunities at the moment

The big barrier these days is the MNC's are looking for mid career hires with degrees out of developing countries

truth of the matter is we were doing a lot better when we looked for practical backgrounds from mid career hires but the focus now on accountacy projections for the market and Harvard scorecards are phucking a lot of industries up from a pragmatic perspective

I know a lot of people trying to get on that project, besides myself.

If you work offshore anywhere you can spend your off time in LOS, not necessary to work in LOS.
