Here Is One For The Hardware Gurus

Recommended Posts

Guest

When I try to power my laptop on I just have a blank screen with one long beep followed by 2 short beeps.

A search has thrown up various scenarios, one is that the graphics adapter is knackered, the other that the hard drive has failed.

I'm thinking the first scenario is the most likely.

Lenovo Thinkpad T61p

Any thoughts or advice appreciated.

Cheers

I would be very surprised if it was the disk. Just pop it out and start up the laptop to see if you get the BIOS info pop up. You could also try reseating the RAM.

Cheers Easy that was the first thing I did, if it's a hd failure there should be something on the screen at least.

Replace the memory. Usually, beeps indicate faulty memory not recognised. Cheap enough option to try. Tuk com may let you try a new one before buying.

Enjoy your drink.

Phil, have you tried measuring the voltage or replacing the 3V CMOS BIOS battery?

I just remembered we had many shop floor laptops fail when I worked at Micron and it was always the battery. If the voltage drops below a certain level it messes up the BIOS and the boot up. Worth a try for a cheap fix?

Cheers for the advice, I've left it in someone else's hands for now.

Is that the friend that gave you the gay porn bleeping blank screen virus?

Well I've just found out what was wrong with the laptop, it had a colony of ants living inside and shorted the motherboard. That will make a good doorstop then.

Now on to the big pc which I suspect is also a motherboard problem.

Onwards and upwards.

I had some in a wall socket that caught fire when I switched it on, I guess there were a lot of them in there.
