Renewing drivers licence

Recommended Posts

Hoping someone can help me out here. The answer may already be on the forum but thought I would try for an up to date answer.

My 5 year car and motorbike Thai drivers licences expired before my last trip and as I only got a 30 day entry stamp on arrival I didn't have a visa to allow me to renew the licences. Is a tourist visa enough to renew the licences or do I need an non-immigrant visa.

Appreciate any answers.

to renew a license you need residency letter from immigration  to renew it. so go to immigration and ask, they may give you it

A medical cert wont be required for a renewal but with only a tourist visa you will not get a new 5 year license. instead a 1 year temp license (or it a temp now 2 years?).

Yeah, the temp which is issued for those with a shorter term tourist visa and the 30-days thingy is now 2 years.

Vpi78 and fondles are correct.

I'm sitting on the transport department in pattaya as I type watching the bloody video that you have to watch for an hour.

The first Thai license is 2 years regardless of what Visa you have.

I was lucky that I got my first driver's license through the refinery's PR folks

they handled all the work permits & stuff & IIRC it didn't even cost me anything

renewing it over the years was pretty easy, even after I no longer had a work permit

Then wait in a line for hours with Thais or V.I.P. straight in. 5 minute out. 5K anytime.

I wouldn't be spending 5000 baht if it only takes around 2 hours. However each to their own and some people would look at 5000 baht as an easy option to have someone do all the leg work.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I will get a non-immigrant O visa on my next trip and then go through the process of renewing my licences.

I used to renew mine WAY out at the provincial office, I think it was on Highway 36, kind of in the middle of nowhere

quiet there, as compared to Pattaya

Au Udom office is quiet some days too, but not always

and the brake reaction test.

at the end of the day the only thing the 5k "VIP" will do is bump you up the cue, you still need to do the tests and watch the vid.

get there early and you will be done before lunch break.
