BA 009 LHR-BKK scum class

Recommended Posts

Today I'm flying on British Airways direct flight from Heathrow to Suvarnabhumi.

Got a jolly good haircut in arrivals for £20 before checking in.

I was still a bit early but my lowly FF status meant that if I went down to zone H I could drop my bags off.

Security was pretty painless apart from some people in front of me didn't realise that it was OK to get their belongings when they came out but I soon had them organised.

A couple of gin and tonics in the Heathrow "spoons" helped kill a little time.

A little peckish I had a snack of Welsh rarebit in the Fortnum and Mason bar which was lovely but so a £10 toasty should be. The real reason for me heading there was to look at the Hamperlings they do for posh in flight dining. At less than £20 I thought they might be worth a go but while they looked lovely there was not an awful lot of food in there.

To be continued, we are taking off.

I have an aversion to eating eggs on flights so popped into boots for a meal deal to have for breakfast on the flight.

I had booked an emergency exit row seat but when online check-in opened I moved to 16A which is a bulkhead seat at the front of economy. The BA app offered me an upgrade to premium economy for £260 ish and I was slightly tempted but glad that I didn't. As I had a bulkhead seat there would have been no more extra leg room and I'm not that tall any way. I think you get an extra inch or two of recline and a better meal. BA now offers better class meals in economy for a fee and I had the vegetarian option, £15, which was lovely.

I was right to grab a meal deal as breakfast was eggs or eggs.

Unfortunately I had an insomniac next to me who insisted having his reading light on for most of the first eight hours of the flight. At which point I'd given up trying to sleep. So when he finally put it off I put mine on opened the windows and gave him a kick to wake up every time I went for a walk to get another whisky. I'd also been kind and allowed him use of the arm rest but from then on it was mine.

Got myself a litre of Bombay Sapphire East for £17 from the in flight duty free which I was pleased with. Also got a nice smelling bottle of Eau de Parfume for myself but I think I might be allergic to it as my nose has been dripping like a tap since I put a bit on.

Immigration was quite and I wasted 850 baht on fast track from Bangkok flight services but peace of mind is worth it IMHO.

I always grab plenty of goodies before boarding... but still eat the on board meal...

I tend to sleep better if i have a belly full..

In the past i'd not eat or drink anything and i always felt crap after the long flight and then realised a belly full of food and plenty to drinks helps you so much more...

OK on my way back in Club World.

Absolutely no queues at check-in but it really annoys me that in the days of online check-in I still have to go to the check-in counter because I need the fast track coupon and pass for the business lounge. I've flown with BA, Gulf, China Southern, Qatar, Emirates and KLM / Air France in business over the last few years and none had sorted this problem.

Right it's wheels up time...

Not entirely sure what went wrong on this flight but the food and service were just an absolute disgrace.

Now before I start with what I got I thought there were some strange choices on the menu.
So are on a flight from Bangkok to London and you'll have some locals and holiday makers that wish to have a taste of Thailand in their meal choices. First meal service has Thai Green Curry (veg) and the second Thai Red Curry (chicken). Really? No one could come up with two Thai dishes that were a little bit more different?

So anyway the meal service begins and I was going to have the chicken satay starter and main course salad with grilled prawns. Unfortunately the chicken satay dish is off and has been replaced by a prawn dish which turns out to be every ingredient from the chicken satay apart from the chicken and obviously with prawns.
"Ah," I said, "don't want the prawns for starter as I'm having the prawn main meal."
I should not have worried as the prawn salad was off.
So I know where they got the prawns from but wonder where the chicken went.

Ok so prawns for starter and I'll have garlic herb crusted chicken breast with onion sauce, mashed potatoes, mushroom, spinach and tomato. What could go wrong with that.
Well I'm not sure how they did it but the potatoes were disgusting to the point I wasn't eating them. The chicken breast was dry and I got no hint of herb or garlic or chicken to be honest and the onion sauce could not save it even if there had been enough of it. Mushrooms were very meh, tomato and spinach were fine but all in all inedible. The bread roll didn't win any prizes either. I just gave up and refused to eat it.

Now when this was served I'd been drinking rose champagne and really wanted a glass of chardonnay but the FA was off too quickly. No problem, press the call bell. Which is reset before anyone comes. Press it again and think I'd better get on with eating my food. Eventually some one arrives and notices I'm not eating my main course and after I tell them it is disgusting I ask why no one has answered my call button. Obviously I'm just asked what did I want and I say it was the wine but it is a bit too late now and I'll have port instead as cheese and crackers will be my next choice. This does not appear for fifteen minutes. During that time I am offered the vegetable thai green curry to replace my inedible main but that isn't going work for me.

So a couple of hours later I'm a bit peckish and go to raid the club kitchen where I find some quite pleasant snacks. Back at my seat I think I need a G&T with this but ten minutes later no one has arrived or even been in our cabin. There is no one in the galley between the two club world cabins and indeed no member of staff in the larger CW cabin. I do find one in the second galley. I ask and my call button is tested and appears to be working but three times I've tried to use it and been ignored. Bad service.

Now on to the second meal service. Strangely there appears to be no choice unlike stated in the menu. I ask the FA about this but am just told everyone is having the same, no explanation.
The starter turns out to be smoked salmon with a wasabi dressing. The dressing is tasteless but salmon is fine. Now this is a pity because my choice of main was going to be a meze that had smoked salmon as a major part and now I have to choose again. This is like the two Thai curry dishes strange or inept menu planning with two dishes containing something as strong tasting as smoked salmon.

I find it strange that the fresh fruit dessert is served with the starter?

Ok main meal choice. Or actually complete lack of choice. The Thai red curry or the aforementioned meze are the only things left. Now I don't want smoked salmon followed by smoked salmon so I'm given one choice and this is unacceptable to me and I tell the FA so and just want my table cleared and decide to get something to eat when I disembark in a restaurant.

All in all the lack of service and terrible food were completely unacceptable.

The strange thing about all this is that on my flight out I was in Economy and ordered a £15 vegetarian kitchen meal which was an absolute pleasure to eat and of much higher quality than my CW meal.

After emailing customer service about the food on the above flight I got an apologetic call from them today. Plus 10,000 avios.

To be honest the scum class journey to Bangkok was more enjoyable than Club World on the way back.

Another thing that really annoyed me is in a time when new aircraft are being built advertising lighting that reduces jet lag crew are still going round on day time flights closing all the window blinds to encourage people to sleep and thus give themselves an easier flight.

There are a few airlines I will not fly with, B.A. is one of them....

Plus of course ALL the Chinese ones......   Cathay is OK.

A.F. is ok lately, used to be absolute shiite in the past.

Sorry about the bad experience.  Been there before with western based airlines as well as TG.

My favorite airlines for upfront are EVA and ANA.

Mate of mine just flew China Southern 2 weeks ago, he was impressed.

Got to say BA is ok for me but I have had great flighta as welll as poor ones.  Crew can make a great flight experience even if ground staff can start your day of at check in in a negative way.

Many staff are not happy that a lack of investment is seeing their Club product looking tired. Not happy also that their CEO (who came from a budget airline) is allowing his young marketing/product team to look for ways of saving money without enhancing the customer experience.

Was your last flight on BA a poor one?

I did China Southern from Schiphol two Christmases ago for the absolute bargain price of £900 with short stopovers in CAN. They were not Emirates or Qatar quality but no real complaints expect white wine could have been cooler and in bigger glasses.

I found them good except one incident 4 years back, I was traveling back February my mother had been taken ill I had a chest infection so not in great shape, I slept most of the leg home and woke up starving just after breakfast.

I walked down to the galley half asleep and asked 'Have you anything to eat ' the women rounded on me and said 'You have just had breakfast ' I said to her 'I have slept the whole flight as I am not well , I asked if there was any food , your response is a disgrace you need more training in how to deal with customers , I don't care what you think your thoughts are irrelevant , is there any food '

She then said 'I have been an air steward 20 years ' so I dived in and said ' Well you should learn to listen what a customer and shareholder says rather than responding with what you think they had ' she got the right hump, her colleague came along and asked what the problem is ,..I stated ' I asked is there any food she said I had breakfast ' the women said no he was asleep the whole trip.

I then said the the women who got me food 'She needs more training ' she went wild, anwyay I got her name and wrote to BA asking if they would train her again, I was just taking the piss... they sent me Avios points saying staff training is an internal issue , I wrote back saying as a shareholder and customer any feedback I give is to help the airline, I got more points lol....

But that's just one moron you run into, I have found the staff very good on the whole.... I have never really seen the  bash BA stance.

BA 0010 BKK-LHR has a bad reputation at the moment partially as it is crewed by Mixed Fleet who are in dispute with the management and also as it is known as the party plane with the crew having just spent 24 hours in Bangkok and probably have bigger hangovers than the customers.

I really can't fault Emirates in any way.
Just came back from a trip in the Sand Pit on Emirates biz class, absolutely top notch service.
Met an old friend in Dubai lounge so had a few hours at the bar on the A380, great way to travel.
Next trip is booked with Emirates again but booked on Qatar for the xmas trip as timing is better and want to compare them, I've heard their biz class is tremendous also.

The flights we use from Sydney to bkk are code shared with emirates occasionally we are on a emirates ( sardine class) its light years ahead of the Qantas twice as much choice in the meals , Qantas 2.5 weeks later had 90% of the same movies it had on the outward bound flight

New 777 from Kuwait to Dubai, an absolutely outstanding plane. Have thought about trying Qatar but the arrival times into Kuwait aint that good for me.

Done both Emirates and Qatar business class. Emirates was good. Qatar was stunning. Herringbone layout, more feeling of space. Dine on demand...ie. you can eat what you want, when you want.

I would recommend the cheese board, and a glass or 2 of port!

Flying out of Oslo with Qatar I noticed that the port they had on board was extremely good. It was my first time with dining on demand so I tested it out by having cheese board and port followed by cheese board and port then cheese board and port and finally dessert and port before having a little nap.

We managed 2 bottles of Port between 3 of us at the bar on Emirates, not the best idea on a flight, was rough as fook when I woke up at landing time.

That's one down fall with Emirates, no food on demand, well apart from cup noodles.

Like the style!!

I looked up the port they had on board when I arrived. Can't remember the make, but it retailed at £90 plus. I made sure I got my money's worth over the 4 legs!
