Hanoi 5 Days 4 Nights

Recommended Posts

Just edited the thread title as it was a 5 days trip, not 4 days.

Riding the bus, picking up passengers which is a bit difficult as there is little parking space and the police don't allow the drivers to stop.

A stop at a restaurant was made where these nice dogs where probably waiting to be served....to the tourists.

A couple of photographers will take pictures of you and try to sell them at a very high price. You can bargain a lot or don't buy at all.

The trip was organized via the hotel by a new company with a better boat than the rest. They were doing everything to enjoy the trip.

For overnight trips these boats are used. This one seems to be a better class compared to the others I have seen.

Regarding food, you should search the net. As we wanted to try the local food and the majority was voting for Thai food as alternative, we tried only once a western place.

This was outstanding!

Called Black Jack's and is not far from the lake.

https://www.google.co.th/maps/place/Black+Jack's/@21.0325331,105.8516769,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x3135abc067c4b297:0x7fa53b3163e59238!8m2!3d21.0325331!4d105.8538656

Steak and Tex Mex. Even the Thais loved their western dish.

Thanks for posting Campario.

Loved the miniature tree.

Was thinking to put one in my garden but I believe they are expensive and lots of stuff doesn't want to grow here. Too much sun, not enough sun, too much rain, not enough water,...I don't get it.

Some tips I remember from when I did my research:

-book the airport taxi through your hotel to avoid being scammed. My hotel charged 18 USD for a trip of 40 km (I think it took 1 hour?). If you are in a larger group, they offer 7 seaters as well which cost just a bit more (22 USD). Those are good for 4-5 people with little luggage.

-tours should be booked through the hotel as well. This might cost just a few dollars more, but again you will be better protected against scams and if you have any complaints, the hotel will assist you. Also it saves you time to checkout different travel agencies. Different prices are also reflected by different classes of boats and service, so a day trip to Halong Bay offered by different operators cannot always be compared by the price. The trip to Halong or Tamcoc is long, especially the return trip when the roads are busy. It can take much longer due to traffic jams even outside the city, as the road conditions are poor compared to TH.

-Changing money: we had some Euro and USD with us. The rate at the hotel was close to the medium(bank transfer rate) internet exchange rate. Never checked at the banks, but I don't think you will get a much better rate. Might depend on the hotel of couse. The larger bills like tours and hotel I paid in USD, the rest in local currency.

Never used an ATM.

-Taxi: some companies were recommended but I didn't wrote the names down. We took any larger car that was available, as we were 5. Never had a problem.

-hotel: hotels are cheap. We were on a budget, booked through booking.com but the price was same as the one one the website of the hotel. Maybe we got 1 room upgraded becasue of my genius status, but you better check if direct booking is maybe even cheaper? I would spend a bit more next time when travelling with GF only. The Golden Legend Diamond was 45 USD for the Deluxe Double Room with City View (which had more or less no view at all).

-Thang long water puppet theater: Shows daily at 3:30pm, 5pm, 6:30pm, 8pm and 9:15pm

Book the VIP seats as they have some legroom.

-Ho Chi Minh mausoleum: the mummy is restored every year in France or somewhere else in Europe. If you want to see him, make sure he is actually there.

Good tips.

Have booked airport transfer through hotel already at about 12 pounds ($18).

Will take dollars so probably change up at hotel.

Good tip about tours.

Have booked Eclipse Legend just east of the lake at 105 pounds for 5 nights. Booked double deluxe at single rate.

Looking forward to my trip.

Didn't realise Obama will be there 29th but begone before I arrive.
